Set and Props

Hello,

For the past term Ruma Kereru has been making set and props for our production, at the end of the year. Our production is about, Alice in Westland. We are making lots of set and props, some of the props include, hand decapitation machine, bushes, gumboot sign and lots more. I was on making the narrarators books because I am one of the narrarators, I was doing this with Meia and Peyton. We decided to do a light bule backround, with a dark blue and gold border. Then we wrote Alice in Westland on the front in black paint. After that we did another one for Peyton because she was the other narrarator.

I also am doing a pair of gumboots, for decoration because the play is about a Gumboot contest and a evil queen. I decided to do the pair of gumboots on different characters, in the actual Alice in Westland. I am doing the white rabbit and the caterpillar, so far I really like them.

I also helped to paint one of the bushes, I painted it normal green on one side and a bright pink on the back. I painted it bright pink on the back, because it is in a crazy land.

West Coast athletics

Hello,

On Tuesday the 4th of November, 12 year 5/6 from Kaniere school when to Greymouth. We went there for West coast athletics, all of us had qualifyed in at least one event. In the morning we got ready to go in the car to Greymouth, I was in a car with Meia, Loren , Max M and Me. When we got there we sat down on the grass and waited for other schools to arrive. After most schools had arrived the orginiser of the event told us what event was first, It was the 800 meters. The event was delayed a bit because there were road work. I was in the 800, we lined up on the starting line. As we took of we all merged, I stayed in the middle group of people. We had to do two laps of the 400 meter track. I came 6th, and my friend got first! I was really proud of myself. After everyone who had to run the long distance had finish we were in our next event. It was High Jump for the year 6 girls, I was also in this. We got told the order we would go in, I made all the first jumps, I got up to 1.10m high. The only bar I couldn’t jump was 1.15m which is my personal best. I got 5th and my other friend got 3rd of 4th. The next event was long jump, I wasn’t in this so I watched. After I watched for a bit I had my shotput. I threw about 5.00 meters. Then after some sprints that I wasn’t in, I had my Discus. I was 2 last to throw, I knew the person in front of me. My last throw was the best, it was 15.00 meters my personal best! In the end I came 2nd in Discus, I qualifyed to go to Canterbury! I’m so excited.

Touch

Hello,

Yesterday I went to touch, for touch Kaniere school has 2 year 5/6 teams. I am in a team with Sophie, Ollie, Max, Brandon and Tane. Touch is rugby but you touch the person instead of tackleing them. We had to be at Cass square at 3:30 PM, and our game started at 4:oo PM. Yesterday was our first games for the season. When we arrived we did a warm up game, and passed the ball around in a circle. I was really excited!

Then we got called up to a shelter in the middle of the field, and they told us which field we were on. After we had got to the field, another team came and our first game started! We were against a all boys team with a few Kaniere students in it. We lost that game by two trys. During the next game it started to rain heavily, but we still tied that game! Our third and final game was against the other Kaniere team. It was pouring with rain and we were freezing on the field. We lost that game by a few trys but it was still fun.

Vape or smoke?

Hello,

On Wednesday some of the year 6s from Kaniere school went to a science expo at the high school. It was about vaping and smoking and the damage it causes to your body. I went in a car with Meia, Sophie, Indi and Ann. When we got there we sat on the floor and listened to the guy that was running the expo. He showed us some graphs, that show the decress in smoking over a few years but a high increse in vapeing. Then we watched a small video that showed us about the things that smoking does to your brain. He also talked about Christopher Columbus, and how he brought the plant tobaco to America.

We got to walk around and look at some things about smoking and vaping. There was a photo thing that shows how you might look in 15 years if you started smokeing. There was also a container that showed what things go into smokes, Did you know there is rat poison in smokes?

We also go to smell what smokes smell like, the man said that the flavors in vapes we made to appeal to young people. Another activity there was there were 2 pig lungs, one normal and one that had been smoked, you got to pump two air things that went into the lungs. The one that had been smoked was gross and black. The lungs represent what happen to your lungs if you smoke.

What I learned from the expo was that both smoking and vaping  is bad for you.

Bridge Valley Camp 2025

Hello,

On Tuesday 9th of September the year 5s and 6s from my school when to at Bridge valley. Some of the year 6s parent came with a car so that we could ride with them. My mum came and took me and Indi in her car. We left at 8:10am and stopped at Reefton for about 20minutes before countineuing to Bridge Valley Adventure Camp. We arrived there at about 12:30 so the entire journey in the car was about 4hours long. After we got to the camp we had a little while to explore our cabin and the camp before we had morning tea. After that we did a top team activity where we had to do multible activity’s and we got points on if we finished it in 5 minutes. My team didn’t do to well but we still got to do the tug of war at the end and we won against another team. The last tug of war was Kids vs Parents and we won 2 of the 3 times! Then it was free time until dinner and cabin checks. I explored with my friends before going to dinner. That night we played a game of spotlight and I lost. Finally it was lights out!

I woke up early and at 7:30 we were allowed out of our cabins. We had breakfast and then we got into our first activity’s. My first one was Burmer trail/ confidence course which was fun. Our second activity was Low ropes which was my least favourite one. Finally we had Zipline over the lake which was fun! Finally it was dinner, and lights out.

On Thursday I woke up and talked for a bit and went for a bit of a free time before breakfast. After breakfast we had our first activity for the day. My activity was Kayaking which  was fun because we got to paddle around the lake. At the end of the first activity we did a raft bridge where we would line up with our boats touching and the end kayak person would stand up and run across the rest of the kayaks and back again. Me and two other people ran and none of us fell off. Then we got out and went to the dining hall to eat Morning tea which was baking and fruit. After that we went to our next Activity which was Abseiling. We when over to this massive tower that had rock climbing walls of three sides and put on a helmet and harness to wait for the instructure. When the instructure arrive he told us to lean back when we where going down the abseil. We got attached to a rope that was really strong and got to climb one at a time up either 2 different rockwalls or a ladder. When we got to the top the Instructure attached us to a different rope and we had to wait while the person in front of us went down the wall. I went twice and it was my favourite activity of the camp. It was scary because when you went down the wall you had to lean back and the harness would pull on you. I was one of two people that went down twice. When we were all done we went to the dining hall for Lunch. After that we had our last activity for the camp which was Slippery pole. Slippery pole is were you had to sit on a pole hang from the roof and try and hit the other person off with a pillow. You would land on a mat on the floor. I hit off a lot of people. We finished a little early and when and watched the group doing abseiling. Miss Lang and Mrs Scott went down as well. When they were fully done we had afternoon tea. Finally we did a team activity where we had to make a raft in 15 minute and race it around the lake. I was the only girl in my group that went on the raft. We started to sink about a quarter of the way around the small course, our raft flipped and every one fell off. I was the only one that got back on and Max and Jasper Abandoned Ship. Max came back on a few meters later. We were in second but then the other team lost part of their boat so we won! Finally we did our Camp concert at Night. It was really fun and we went to bed soon after. The next morning we woke up and packed to leave we had a little bit of free time before we Left and went back to school which was a 4 hour drive. We stopped at Reefton and saw the Prime Minister! We got a bit of food and then finished the drive back to school!

Poutini and Waitiki Covers

For the past few weeks my class have been making covers for the comics we have made. The comics is about Poutini and Waitiki, first we chose a coloured paper. We got to decide if we wanted to use some coloured paper, I decided to use a light blue colour. Then we placed a plain white bit of paper on top this is were we drew our design. Most people drew some moutanis and a sky but I decided to draw some mountains and a river instead. I am really pleased with my design.

Snow Ball writing

Last week we did a new type of writing, its called Snow ball writing! First we looked at our WALT (We are learning to) then we started to brainstorm. We wrote some of our ideas onto the whiteboard following the theme of “The school trip gone wrong”. There was lots of different ones like, Camp, The museum, Concert and Zoo.  The different thing about snow ball writing is that you write the start of your story then you scrunch it up and throw it to the front of the room, where someone else would pick it up and write the middle before repeating that procces where someone else would pick it up and write the end. I started my story about the zoo, I was really happy with my beginning but when I got it back after people had wrote the middle and end I was surprised. My story now included Shrek!  After that we read each others story’s and laught when funny bits came up. In the end we all all had lots of fun!

Trip to the Zoo

“How long is this going to take?” Mia complained. We were in the school bus on our way to the zoo. “Its right there!” I reply pointing. The bus pulled up outside the entrance and we all streamed out. “Line up,” our teacher shouted. As we signed in excited chatter erupted from the crowd. The first exhibit we past had a tiger in it. I whisper to Mia, “The tiger might escape!” She stared at me before replieing “No it won’t.” The we past another exhibit that had a mysterious creature in it. It was a…

 

Baby Shrek! He was young but cute. He was eating bugs from the ground his lunch!  Mia said to me, “Um what is that monstrosity and why is it in a zoo? Um, I think thats a baby Shrek, an ugly one too. Baby Shrek looked at Mia then…BOOM he dissappeared. The girls heard a strange weird noise behind them. It was like babys laughing! The girls spun around and saw the baby Shrek sitting on the ground behind them!

Reading Task

Reading activity

For the next two weeks we are working on our reading activity.  Our book is Johnny Pohe and the Great Escape. My group’s activity is that we have to make a plane using classroom supplies! First thought we have to do some research about the planes that he flew and why he is so important. We then have to make a slideshow that shows our design for the plane.  But it can’t just be any plane it has to be a similar plane to the one Johnny Pohe flew in World War 2.  Our task also includes that we have to make improvement to the plane he flew so it would keep him safe.

So far I’m on the research/design phase, I’ve learnt that Johnny Pohe was the first māori pilot in the RNZAF and he was posted to 51  Squadron. Johnny Pohe flew 22 missions sucsessfully before he crashed and was captured and put into Stalag Luft III. He was part of the Great Excape out of Stalag Luft III but he was killed before making it away.

I am really excited about making the plane!

Cape Fear!

On the third of May, Meia and I did Cape Fear. Cape Fear is an adventure race for kids, there are 50 teams of two competeing. Its 15 kms bike and 8 kms of running, caving, mud crawling, absailing and rock climbing. Cape Fear is held up near Westport. First we had a safety briefing then we went to the start line which was on the beach. The organisers asked if we were ready and we said “yes”. They blew a tooter and we were off! We had to run about 400m before jumping on to our bikes and biking through cow poo, mud and grass. Part of the track was on a bike track called Kawatiri coastal trail.

We then had to leave our bike and run! We ran up a hill and along the ridge before running back down and going into some caves. The caves had water up to my waist, we got super muddy and wet. After that we had to run for a little longer before crawling under a cargo net. We ran onto a beach before doing a golf shot towards a hole. Then we ran past the finish line up to the absailing and rock climbing. One person had to do the absailing and one person the rock climbing, I did the absailing and it was terrifying.

It was finally the last stretch! We sprinted thought the finish line in 2 hours and 59 minutes! We waited about an hour for prizegiveing. Me and Meia came first in our category! We got some medals that were made from driftwood. Finally we said goodbye and went home.

We had so much fun!

Reading task!

For the past week we have been learning about anzac, we also made some learning slides about the book our group read. The book we read was called Dawn service. We did three slides one every day or two, the third slide was my favorite it was a Minecraft create. I decided to make a biplane which is mentioned in the story.
